Beyond the funeral

Community and welfare work

A death is rarely the only thing a family is dealing with. Where MIFA can help with what comes after it, it does.

A death often costs a family more than the funeral. It can take away an income, interrupt a child’s schooling, or land in the middle of hardship that was already there. Where MIFA can help with what comes after, it does.

What MIFA does beyond funerals

Four areas, set out in full further down: welfare assistance for families in immediate hardship, education support where a child’s schooling is at risk, training for family members who have had to start earning at short notice, and employment help through the association’s network.

The association was formed around bereavement and that is still the bulk of its work. But a family that could not afford a funeral is rarely a family with nothing else going wrong, and MIFA has never treated the two as separate problems.

Who can ask, and how

MIFA is a registered non-profit community association, not a commercial funeral chain, and its assistance work is funded by members and donors.

If you are not certain whether what you need is something the association can do, ask rather than assume. Telling us what has happened costs one call, and you will be given a plain answer either way — including when the answer is no.

The four areas this page will cover

Named here so you know what to ask about. The programmes behind them are being confirmed with the committee before anything is described in detail.

  1. Welfare assistance

Help for families in immediate hardship, where the cost of the funeral is one bill among several.

    Details being confirmed
  2. Education support

Assistance for children whose schooling is at risk after a parent or an earner dies.

    Details being confirmed
  3. Training

Routes back into work for family members who have had to take on earning at short notice.

    Details being confirmed
  4. Employment help

Introductions and practical help for people looking for work through the association's network.

    Details being confirmed

The association was formed around bereavement, and that remains the bulk of what it does. But a family that could not afford a funeral is rarely a family with nothing else going wrong.

Why it is not filled in yet

Listing a programme that does not exist, or that ran once three years ago, is how an organisation loses the trust of the people it is trying to reach.

So each area above gets a page of its own when there is enough behind it to sustain one, and a paragraph here until then. MIFA has never treated bereavement and hardship as separate problems, and the site should not describe them as if it had a scheme for each.

Common questions about MIFA's welfare work

What does MIFA do besides funerals?

Four areas: welfare assistance for families in immediate hardship, education support where a child's schooling is at risk after a parent or earner dies, training for family members who have had to take on earning at short notice, and employment help through the association's network.

Are these welfare programmes running right now?

The four areas are named on this page, but the programmes behind them are still being confirmed with the committee. MIFA does not list a programme it cannot deliver, so call and ask what is available today rather than relying on this page alone.

Who can ask MIFA for help?

Malaysian Indian and Hindu families. If you are not sure whether what you need is something the association can do, ask rather than assume — you will be told plainly either way.

Is MIFA a charity or a funeral company?

Neither exactly. MIFA is a registered non-profit community association, Persatuan Pengebumian India Malaysia, registration number PPM-003-14-06102019.

If you need help and are not sure whether we can give it, ask

The worst outcome is a family that needed something and never asked, because a website did not happen to list it. Call, or send us a note and we will tell you plainly whether it is something MIFA can do.
